15 August fair on the Gartempe riverbank
Saint-Pierre-de-Maillé is a rural commune of around 850 inhabitants in the Montmorillonnais, eastern Vienne, on the Gartempe. The village stretches between the river and hillsides dotted with troglodyte caves inhabited since prehistory. Remarkable heritage (castle ruins, Notre-Dame church, troglodyte dwellings) and an outstanding natural setting make it one of Vienne's most endearing villages. The 15 August fair has become a key summer moment.
The 15 August choice follows the tradition of Poitevin village festivals, concentrating major events on summer public holidays. Peak tourist turnout guarantees attendance, while locals and neighbours gather after scattered holidays.
Saint-Pierre-de-Maillé has remarkable heritage. La Roche caves, troglodyte dwellings carved in limestone, attest ancient human presence. Medieval castle ruins, Romanesque church, and Gartempe riverside walks provide many reasons to linger.
In a particularly preserved part of the Montmorillonnais, near Vienne-Indre border. Brenne Regional Natural Park and its ponds nearby; Angles-sur-l'Anglin (Most Beautiful Village, 15 km); Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe abbey (UNESCO frescoes, 10 km) make it an ideal weekend base.
