An original village room-clearing sale

Saint-Maurice-la-Clouère is a small commune of about 1,200 inhabitants in south Poitou, near Gençay. The village, crossed by the Clouère (Clain tributary), has rich Romanesque heritage with its 12th-century Saint-Maurice church, a listed monument. Each spring, local associations run an original room-clearing sale, this year with two successive dates: 15 and 22 March 2026.

Room-clearing principle

The vide-chambres is a more targeted variant of vide-grenier: specifically emptying rooms — clothing, bed linen, shoes, books, games, toys, decoration. The format suits spring, traditional time of big sorting. Saint-Maurice-la-Clouère's originality lies in the contribution asked: instead of a classic fee, sellers bring a savoury or sweet dish feeding the association bar. In exchange, they get a 1.5m table for their items.

The two 2026 dates

• Sunday 15 March 2026 — Room-clearing in the commune.
• Sunday 22 March 2026 — Second date, same formula.

This doubling lets families extend sales over two weekends, increase chances of moving items and offer renewed range to buyers. Tables are set up the day before by volunteer teams, and racks are available on reservation to display clothing well.

Saint-Maurice-la-Clouère and Gençay

The commune belongs to Gençay canton, south Poitou. Saint-Maurice church, a jewel of Poitevin Romanesque art, is worth stopping: sculpted facade and interior keep remarkable capitals. Gençay (5 km) has feudal castle ruins. Further south, Charroux (France's Most Beautiful Village) is 30 km away.
