Hunting in the Templar city, European capital of the black truffle
On Sunday 5 July 2026, Richerenches opens its annual car boot sale, organised by the Festival Committee, held every first Sunday of July. The originality lies in the setting: stalls spread across the whole perimeter of the Templar city, inside and around the rectangular walls. This rare configuration gives the event an immediate historical dimension.
Beyond heritage, Richerenches owes its worldwide renown to another treasure: the Tricastin black truffle, of which it is the undisputed European capital. Every Saturday morning from November to March, the famous truffle market takes place on Avenue de la Rabasse, drawing growers, brokers, Michelin-starred chefs and enthusiasts from all over France and beyond. In July the truffle market sleeps, but the truffle identity permeates the village year-round.
Founded in the 12th century by the Templars, Richerenches keeps a perfectly legible rectangular plan with partly standing walls, four corner towers, a castle chapel, a church and a commandery. It is one of the oldest and best-preserved Templar foundations in France.
Mainly village residents and Enclave des Papes neighbours sell the usual village mix: crockery, small furniture, toys, books, records, clothing, linen, tools and decorative items. Enthusiasts may spot local pottery, embroidered Provençal linen, old kitchen utensils and occasionally old truffle-related documents.
