About Place Kléber Book Market

The Place Kléber Book Market is one of the rare permanent book markets in France, alongside those in Paris and Lyon. Created in May 1990, it now gathers around twenty booksellers who set up their stalls every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday on Place Kléber and at the entrance of rue des Hallebardes, in the heart of Strasbourg. All literary genres are represented: novels, short stories, comics, crime fiction, Alsatian books, educational works, and antique books. Visitors will also find old postcards, posters, and ancient coins. A must-visit for book lovers, collectors, and bargain hunters looking for literary gems at affordable prices.

A historic book market in the heart of Strasbourg

The Place Kléber Book Market is one of the very rare permanent book markets in France, alongside the famous booksellers of the Seine quays in Paris and the book market of Lyon. Created in May 1990, it was first established at Place Gutenberg before moving, about fifteen years ago, to Place Kléber and the entrance of rue des Hallebardes. Since then, around twenty authorized booksellers have met there every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday to keep this unique Alsatian tradition alive.

A rich and varied literary offering

The market stalls offer a journey through all literary genres: contemporary and classic novels, short stories, crime fiction, science fiction, comics, educational works, children's books, and antique books. Special attention is given to Alsatian books and regional works, reflecting the cultural and historical richness of Alsace. Booksellers complete their offerings with antique postcards, posters, engravings, and sometimes even ancient coins, much to the delight of collectors.

Place Kléber, showcase of the historic heart of Strasbourg

Place Kléber is the largest square in Strasbourg and its beating heart. Dominated by the statue of General Kléber and bordered by the Aubette, it is an essential gathering place in the center of a district listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Strolling between the booksellers' stalls allows you to combine literary treasure hunting with a visit to the historic center, Notre-Dame Cathedral, and the picturesque streets of Grande Île.
