May Day hunting in the Lamothe-Cadillac bastide
Every 1 May, the Patrimoine et Culture association takes over the centre of Saint-Nicolas-de-la-Grave for its great traditional flea market. In the heart of this medieval bastide founded in 1135, famous for being the birthplace of Antoine Laumet de Lamothe-Cadillac founder of Detroit, the spring gathering brings together private sellers and hunters on Joseph Lasserre alley and the bourg's streets. A day of hunting at the foot of the historic castle and medieval covered market, near the Tarn-Garonne confluence.
Saint-Nicolas-de-la-Grave is one of the oldest bastides in Tarn-et-Garonne, founded in 1135 by joint charter of the Moissac abbot Guillaume, viscount Saxetus de Lomagne and viscountess Sybille d'Auvillar, who established it as a sauveté under Saint Nicholas's protection. Set at the confluence of the Tarn and the Garonne, it preserves exceptional heritage: its medieval covered market, its 17th-century church with Toulouse bell tower, its castle where Richard the Lionheart stayed around 1185 and which houses the birthplace of Antoine Laumet de Lamothe-Cadillac, the local boy who became founder in 1701 of the fort that would become Detroit, USA. It is in this unique medieval setting that, every 1 May, the Patrimoine et Culture association's flea market unfolds.
The Patrimoine et Culture association, rooted in village life, places its flea market under the sign of local heritage preservation and cultural funding. The gathering, set on May Day, benefits from a long weekend favourable to attendance: families, local hunters, tourists exploring the confluence and lovers of Occitan bastides converge on the village centre. The date has become a classic in the northern Tarn-et-Garonne hunters' calendar, between Moissac, Castelsarrasin and Valence d'Agen.
The display takes place at the village centre, mainly on Joseph Lasserre alley and adjoining streets, in a remarkable heritage setting. Private sellers lay out crockery, clothes, toys, books, vinyl records, family brocante, small furniture, trinkets and various finds, while a few visiting dealers offer more targeted pieces. The immediate proximity of the castle and Lamothe-Cadillac's birth house, now a museum, allows hunters to combine their visit with a cultural tour. The medieval covered market, beating heart of the bourg for nearly nine centuries, is an iconic landmark.
Saint-Nicolas-de-la-Grave is fortunate to combine heritage, nature and gastronomy. The Lamothe-Cadillac museum retraces the extraordinary life of this ambitious adventurer who gave his name and coat of arms to the prestigious Cadillac car brand. The nearby leisure park, at the Tarn-Garonne confluence, offers a body of water perfect for picnicking or family walks after the hunt. Enthusiasts will extend to Moissac (15 minutes) for its UNESCO-listed Saint-Pierre abbey and famous chasselas grapes, or to Auvillar and its round market hall, one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France.
For the magic of the medieval setting at the foot of the covered market and castle, for the heritage and cultural dimension carried by the organising association, for the strategic May Day date allowing the gathering to be included in a spring escapade, and for the exceptional touristic richness of the surroundings (Cadillac museum, Tarn-Garonne confluence, Moissac, Auvillar): the Patrimoine et Culture flea market in Saint-Nicolas-de-la-Grave is one of the loveliest spring hunting gatherings in Tarn-et-Garonne.
