The great autumn clearance sale in the shopping streets of the medieval city
Twice a year — early March and mid-October — the merchants of Parthenay organise their clearance sale in the city centre streets. The autumn edition, usually held on the third Saturday of October, offers Parthenay shops the opportunity to sell end-of-line items, seasonal goods at reduced prices and all kinds of bargains. The event attracts a loyal and sizeable public from Parthenay-Gâtine and beyond.
From Rue Jean Jaurès to Boulevard de la Meilleraye, via Place des Bancs and Rue Louis Aguillon, the centre's streets transform into a vast open-air market. Shopkeepers display their goods on the pavements at attractive prices. A boot sale is often associated with the event, allowing private sellers to sell their everyday items along the route.
Sub-prefecture of Deux-Sèvres, Parthenay is a fortified town that has preserved a remarkable medieval heritage: the Porte Saint-Jacques, a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela, the citadel overlooking the Thouet river, the lanes of the Saint-Laurent quarter. This characterful city provides a unique backdrop for a clearance sale, blending commerce and heritage in a warm atmosphere.
The autumn clearance sale is also a promotion of local shopping. By offering reduced prices and a festive atmosphere, Parthenay merchants attract families and revitalise the town centre. The event helps maintain a thriving commercial fabric in this small Gâtine town.
