A morning of hunting in the heart of the ochre country
Gargas is one of the most remarkable villages of the Pays d'Apt, famous for its unique ochre heritage. The ochre quarries, exploited since the 18th century, have shaped a flamboyant landscape of red, yellow and orange cliffs, visible at the Bruoux Mines and along the quarry trails. It is in this exceptional natural and industrial setting that the Les Ocriers flea market takes place each spring, with official authorisation.
Gargas was long the primary ochre producer of the massif. The Bruoux Mines, a huge underground network of 40 km of galleries hand-dug by ochre workers, bear witness to this mining era. The toponym Les Ocriers directly recalls these craftsmen of colour.
Private-sellers' flea market: family bric-a-brac, clothing, toys, books, tableware, linen, small furniture, old tools, decorative items. Occasionally, one finds objects linked to ochre, pottery, basketry or olive oil.
The 2026 edition of the Les Ocriers flea market took place on Sunday 5 April, in accordance with the municipal order issued by the Gargas town council. The official framework guarantees a secure and well-managed event in one of the most emblematic areas of the ochre village.
In the spring atmosphere of the Luberon, between the red cliffs and the trails of the former mines, private exhibitors displayed their goods: clothing, toys, books, knick-knacks, tableware, linen, small furniture. Hunters from the Pays d'Apt and tourists passing through enjoyed this morning of bargain hunting.
