Montmédy occupies a strategic position on the northern border of the Meuse, a few kilometers from Belgium. The citadel, built in 1545 by Charles V, was reinforced by Vauban after the 1657 siege led by Louis XIV and 30,000 soldiers. With over 1.5 km of visitable ramparts, it is one of the largest fortifications in the Grand Est. The town also houses the Museum of Fortification, which traces the evolution of siege techniques from the Celtic era to Vauban.
