Hunting in Peter Mayle's village
The Ménerbes Brocante Fair is a cherished, confidential gathering in the Luberon hunters' calendar. Held in the ancient village centre, it takes over the paved lanes, shaded squares and small public spaces that charm this perched town. Brocanteurs set up in a remarkable heritage setting near the citadel and Saint-Luc church.
Ménerbes became world-famous thanks to Peter Mayle, who lived there and whose bestseller A Year in Provence (1989) helped bring the Luberon to global attention. Among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, it offers exceptional views from its rocky spur: the Calavon valley, Mont Ventoux to the north, the Luberon massifs to the south. Visitors discover the Jane Eakin House, the Corkscrew Museum at Domaine de la Citadelle and lanes inhabited by artists and writers.
Exhibitors offer a characteristic Luberon selection: old Provençal furniture (armoires, tables, commodes), ceramics from Moustiers, Vallauris and Apt, glassware, old linen, Provence engravings, copper, ironwork, antique jewellery, old books and curiosities. Quality matches the village's standing and its international clientele.
Ménerbes is also wine land: AOC Ventoux, AOC Luberon, Côtes du Rhône. Domaine de la Citadelle, owned by the Rousset-Rouard family, produces excellent wines and houses the famous Corkscrew Museum. After hunting, lunch on a terrace with Luberon view and a glass of estate rosé is the perfect Provençal complement.
