Picardy tradition at the foot of the aeronautics capital
The Méaulte village réderie is the annual bargain hunting rendezvous of this emblematic Pays du Coquelicot community, known for its major aeronautical past. Set up in the parking lot of the village hall, the event brings together private exhibitors and bargain hunters in the friendly atmosphere of a traditional Picardy réderie, a stone's throw from Albert and the memorial sites of the Somme.
Méaulte is a community of nearly 1,200 inhabitants located in the Pays du Coquelicot, a few kilometers from Albert, in the historic heart of the Battle of the Somme. The village is world famous for its aeronautical industry: it was here that Henry Potez founded in 1919 one of the largest aeronautical factories in France, which today still produces fuselage sections for Airbus. This industrial heritage cohabits with the Picardy village identity, of which the annual réderie is one of the fine testimonies.
The term "réderie" is the typically Picardy name for flea markets and popular bargain markets. The Méaulte réderie embodies all its codes: relaxed village atmosphere, exhibitors mostly residents of the community and surroundings, varied assortment of bric-a-brac, accessible prices and friendly spirit. Set up in the parking lot of the village hall, the event benefits from a vast and flat space, facilitating the installation of exhibitors and the circulation of visitors.
The réderie stands offer the usual range of Somme flea markets: old dishware, household linen, books and comics, old and new toys, clothes for the whole family, records and CDs, small furniture, tools, various trinkets. Some exhibitors, close to the local aeronautical industrial fabric, sometimes offer objects related to this activity: scale models, old documentation, specialized tools. An original aspect that may interest collectors.
Méaulte is located in the heart of the territory marked by the battles of 1914-1918, and particularly the Battle of the Somme of 1916. A few minutes away, Albert and its basilica with the Golden Virgin, the Thiepval memorial, the Beaumont-Hamel trenches, the Somme 1916 museum invite visitors to a moving memorial day. For bargain hunters curious about history, the Méaulte réderie can be the morning of a broader day mixing bargain hunting and remembrance, in this particularly poignant part of the Somme.
