Antiquarian and Second-hand Book Day of Pernes-les-Fontaines

A book festival rooted in the medieval city

For years the association Livres Ensemble has organised this book day on Ascension Thursday in Pernes-les-Fontaines, a date bibliophiles look forward to. The medieval city, former capital of the Comtat Venaissin, offers a superb heritage setting. The contrast between old books and the fountains bubbling nearby is one of the event's signatures.

Fifty booksellers, ten departments

About fifty exhibitors: 45 professional booksellers plus 15 amateur members of Livres Ensemble. A craftsman bookbinder and restorer usually gives public demonstrations.

What to find

Books from the 16th to the 20th century, first editions, full-leather bindings, illustrated works, Provençal library, regional works, old postcards, papers, posters, engravings, almanacs, children's books, collectible comics, literature, philosophy, science, travel, religion, fine arts, second-hand books at affordable prices.

A gathering of passionates

The event is as much a market as a meeting of enthusiasts. Booksellers and hunters reconnect year after year.

Bibliophile tips

Arrive by 9 am. Strong bags (books are heavy), cash for negotiation, a wish list. Ask booksellers: many keep hidden pieces in reserve.
