The Gratiferia, a market where everything is free

The Gratiferia d'Espalion is a unique event in Aveyron, organized jointly by the associations L'Auberge Espalionne and La Parenthèse. The concept, born in Argentina in 2010 under the impetus of Ariel Rodríguez Bosio, is based on a radical principle of freeness: everyone can bring objects they no longer use and freely leave with those they like, without any exchange of money. Unlike bartering, you don't need to bring something to take an item.

A solidarity and ecological gathering

The Gratiferia d'Espalion is part of a responsible consumption and waste reduction approach. Instead of throwing away still functional objects, participants give them a second life by making them available to everyone. The event welcomes all sorts of objects: clothing, dishes, books, toys, small furniture, decorations, provided they are clean and in good working order. A special collection is also organized for the benefit of the association Jamais sans toiT, which helps homeless people.

L'Auberge Espalionne, a third place on the banks of the Lot

L'Auberge Espalionne is an associative third place created in 2019, located on the quai du 19 mars 1962 in Espalion, on the banks of the Lot. Its name refers to the expression 'auberge espagnole' (Spanish inn), a place where everyone brings and finds what interests them. Throughout the year, the association offers cultural, creative, and solidarity activities open to all residents of Espalion and its surroundings: poetry evenings, workshops, screenings, and of course, the annual Gratiferia.

Espalion is a charming small town in Aveyron, crossed by the Lot and located on the paths of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. Known for its Pont Vieux (Old Bridge) listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, its medieval tanneries, and its Calmont d'Olt castle, the town offers a remarkable heritage setting. The Gratiferia fits perfectly into this human-sized town where social connection and associative life play an important role.

Participation Guidelines

Objects can be dropped off the day before the event in the late afternoon or on the day itself from opening time. Entry is free and open. No registration is required, whether you come to drop off or just browse. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, in the spirit of sharing and generosity that characterizes the gratiferia movement worldwide.
