Grand flea market on August 14th in one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France, in the heart of Berry
The grand flea market of Saint-Benoît-du-Sault takes place every August 14th in one of the heritage jewels of the Indre. This fortified village, classified as one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France, offers a striking medieval setting for a day of bargain hunting. Exhibitors – professional and private dealers – set up their stalls in the sloping alleys, shaded squares, and terraces of the town, offering antique furniture, earthenware, folk art objects, books, trinkets, embroidered linens, old tools, and curiosities of all kinds.
Saint-Benoît-du-Sault is a commune of about 600 inhabitants perched on a granite spur overlooking the Portefeuille valley, in the southwest of Indre. The former Benedictine priory, founded in the 10th century, has left the village its Romanesque church with sculpted capitals, its ramparts, and its belfry. The granite houses with flat tile roofs, the terraced gardens, and the winding alleys form a remarkably preserved architectural ensemble. The village today hosts artists and craftspeople who contribute to its cultural dynamism.
The date of August 14th, the eve of the Assumption, places this flea market at the heart of the summer season and holidays. Attendance is high, attracting visitors from all over Berry and neighboring departments. Admission is free and the village setting invites you to extend your visit with a walk along the ramparts.
