The major bargain hunters' rendezvous on Promenade Sancert
Every June, the Grand Annual Flea Market of Moissac (82200) sets up on the charming Promenade Sancert, along the Canal des Deux Mers. A family-friendly day that ranks among the largest bargain-hunting events in the department: clothes, toys, tools, small furniture, china, books, general antiques at unbeatable prices, in an exceptional setting at the heart of the abbey city.
Every year, on the second Sunday of June, the Promenade Sancert turns into one of the largest gatherings of bargain hunters in Tarn-et-Garonne. The Grand Annual Flea Market of Moissac takes over the shaded path running along the Canal des Deux Mers, in a simply enchanting setting: century-old plane trees, calm canal waters, old bridges and the silhouette of Saint-Pierre Abbey in the background.
The event brings together a substantial number of exhibitors — mostly private sellers, with a few professionals — offering an extraordinarily varied range. Bargain hunters will find adults' and children's clothes, toys in great quantity, manual and power tools, small furniture, china of all eras, kitchenware, books and comics, vinyl, CDs and DVDs, appliances, garden furniture, plants, baby items, bicycles, sports gear, decoration, general antiques and family bric-a-brac. Prices are attractive, in the tradition of large popular flea markets.
The Promenade Sancert and its surroundings border the canal lateral to the Garonne (Canal des Deux Mers), which links Moissac to Bordeaux and the Mediterranean via the Canal du Midi. This greenway shaded by magnificent plane trees offers an absolutely unique setting: hunting peacefully, in the shade, by the water, with moored pleasure boats and the abbey city in the background.
The atmosphere is decidedly family-friendly. Children stroll looking for toys or comics, hunters track good deals, walkers simply enjoy the canal walk. The on-site bar and food stand allow for picnics on the grass or at tables set up for the occasion.
Take advantage of your visit to discover Moissac. Saint-Pierre Abbey, its Romanesque tympanum (12th century, one of the masterpieces of world Romanesque sculpture) and its cloister are UNESCO World Heritage sites along the Camino de Santiago. The city is also famous for its chasselas (PDO table grape) and its Saturday morning market.
Arrive early. Parking can be tight in the centre: prefer outer parking and walk the Promenade Sancert. Bring cash, sturdy bags and a picnic basket. Possible sun: hat and water recommended in June.
