Every spring, the Emmaüs Ariège community organizes its big annual street sale in Saint-Girons (09200). This unmissable event in the social and associative life of Couserans brings together hundreds of visitors over two days — generally a Friday and a Saturday in April — who come to take advantage of bargains while supporting the Emmaüs cause.
The Emmaüs Ariège community is based in Saint-Girons, the capital of Couserans. Founded in the spirit of the movement created by Abbé Pierre in 1949, it welcomes and supports people facing social difficulties while collecting, sorting, and reselling second-hand items. This activity is both a source of funding for the community and a service to the local population, who can acquire good-condition items at low prices.
The usual bric-a-brac at Emmaüs Saint-Girons, open on weekdays and Saturdays, offers furniture, clothing, crockery, functional appliances, and toys. But it is during the big annual street sale that the offer reaches its peak, with stock accumulated over several months for the occasion.
The big spring street sale is the flagship event of the Emmaüs Ariège community. It is held at 25 rue Villefranche in Saint-Girons, over two consecutive days. The 2025 edition was held on Friday, April 11th and Saturday, April 12th, true to the tradition of a mid-week opening extended into the weekend.
During these two days, the community's entire stock is put on sale at unbeatable prices: clothes for men, women, and children, books of all kinds, decorative items, furniture, crockery, and small appliances offered at a few euros each. The turnout is such that the first hours of the sale usually see a long queue forming at the entrance.
Beyond the commercial opportunity, the Emmaüs Saint-Girons street sale is an act of solidarity. The profits from the sale are fully reinvested in the community's mission: accommodation and support for the people welcomed, funding for local projects, and support for Emmaüs France and International initiatives. Buying from Emmaüs means participating in a circular and solidarity-based economy that gives a second life to objects while helping those in need.
Saint-Girons is the sub-prefecture of the Saint-Girons arrondissement and the unofficial capital of Couserans, this region of Ariège with Gascon roots. With its 6,000 inhabitants, it is one of the liveliest towns in the department, with its particularly renowned Saturday morning market, its shops, restaurants, and active cultural associations. The Emmaüs street sale is part of this vibrant social fabric.
