Weekly Saturday flea market on the Saint-Girons market, capital of Couserans
The Brocante du Marché de Saint-Girons is held every Saturday morning on the market square of Saint-Girons, capital of Couserans. Backed by the famous traditional Saturday market that has made the town famous for centuries, this regular flea market offers antique objects, furniture, tableware, and Ariège curiosities in a lively Pyrenean market atmosphere. A must for lovers of Couserans flea market finds.
Every Saturday morning, the market square of Saint-Girons hosts, in addition to the traditional market, a weekly flea market that attracts many exhibitors and bargain hunters from all over Couserans. Saint-Girons, a sub-prefecture of Ariège and the historic capital of Couserans, is renowned for its Saturday market, one of the liveliest in the department, which has been held continuously since the Middle Ages.
Nestled at the confluence of the Salat and Lez rivers, at an altitude of 410 meters, Saint-Girons is a medium-sized town (around 7,000 inhabitants) that plays a central role in the life of Couserans, a former Pyrenean county. Its town center with lively shopping streets, its private mansions from the 17th and 18th centuries, and its bridges over the Salat make it a pleasant city to visit. The Saturday market, which takes over the squares and streets of the center each week, is the perfect opportunity to add a flea market browsing session.
The Brocante du Marché de Saint-Girons benefits from the influx of visitors generated by the traditional Saturday market. Amidst the stalls of local cheeses, cured meats, and fresh vegetables, the flea market stands offer their selection of antique items: rustic Pyrenean furniture, tableware and earthenware, old tools, books, trinkets, vintage clothing, and accessories. The atmosphere is that of a traditional mountain sub-prefecture market, warm and relaxed.
The Saturday flea market is part of the long commercial tradition of Saint-Girons, a town that has always managed to unite the inhabitants of its many valleys (Lez, Salat, Garbet, Bouigane) around its weekly market. Even today, Saturday mornings see residents from the most remote villages of Couserans converge on the sub-prefecture to do their shopping, meet their neighbors, and perhaps find a good deal among the flea market vendors.
The flea market is held every Saturday morning on the market square of Saint-Girons. The town is accessible from Foix via the D117 (about 40 km) or from Saint-Gaudens in Haute-Garonne via the D117. Free parking is available nearby. The shops and restaurants in the town center allow for a pleasant extension of the morning.
