About Goat Fair Saint-Aupre

The Goat Fair of Saint-Aupre is one of the oldest fairs in France with over 420 editions. It is held every year in September over two days and includes a large car boot sale, professional exhibitors, art craftsmen, an enclosure with goats of different breeds, and demonstrations of traditional crafts. The Saint-Aupre Festival Committee organizes this emblematic event of the Chartreuse region.

The Goat Fair: over four centuries of tradition

With over 420 editions to its name, the Goat Fair of Saint-Aupre is one of the oldest fairs in France, a remarkable record that testifies to the deep roots of this tradition in Chartreuse life. This centuries-old tradition, perpetuated with passion by the Saint-Aupre Festival Committee, is a major event in local life in Chartreuse. Every third weekend of September, the entire village comes alive to host this festive event which attracts visitors and exhibitors from all over the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.

A rich and varied program over two days

The Goat Fair is not just a simple car boot sale: it offers a complete and diverse program over two full days. The large open-air flea market hosts private car boot sales and professional antique dealers side by side, offering a wide choice for bargain hunters. Art craftsmen share their passion and their age-old know-how: wood sculptors, cabinetmakers, blacksmiths, and basket weavers demonstrate their skills and sell their creations. An educational enclosure presents goats of different breeds — Alpine, Saanen, Poitevine — to the delight of children and lovers of rural heritage. The competition for the most beautiful goat, a highlight of the fair, rewards the best breeders in the massif.

Chartreuse in celebration

Saint-Aupre is a commune in Chartreuse of about 1,800 inhabitants, located north of Voiron in a green and preserved mid-mountain environment. The Goat Fair is part of the agro-pastoral tradition of this territory where goat farming has always played an essential role in the local economy and culture. The Saturday evening meal, hearty and convivial, brings together the inhabitants around the specialties of the Chartreuse region. The refreshment stand run by volunteers from the Festival Committee accompanies visitors throughout the weekend.
