The Foire Sainte-Croix de Lessay β 1,000 exhibitors, 3 days in September, the largest fair in Manche
The Foire Sainte-Croix de Lessay (50430) is the largest event in Manche and one of the most important fairs in France. Organized over 3 days in September, it brings together over 1,000 exhibitors, including many flea market dealers and antique dealers. A thousand-year-old fair in the heart of the Norman Cotentin.
The Foire Sainte-Croix de Lessay is a national institution. Organized every year over 3 days in September in the town of Lessay (50430), it brings together over 1,000 exhibitors and attracts tens of thousands of visitors from all over France and Europe. It is the largest fair in Manche and one of the most important traditional fairs in France, heir to a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages.
The Foire Sainte-Croix is above all a traditional agricultural and commercial fair, with its livestock markets, animal competitions, funfair rides, and attractions. But it is also one of the major events for flea markets and antiques in the Grand Ouest: over 1,000 exhibitors set up in the fairgrounds, including many flea market dealers, antique dealers, sellers of old books, tableware, antique furniture, tools, and various collectibles.
Three days of fair are necessary to explore the immensity of this gathering. The exhibitors occupy entire hectares around the town, in an organization that resembles military logistics. Each category β animals, rides, artisans, flea market dealers, restaurateurs β has its dedicated space, but the boundaries are porous, and one naturally moves from one sector to another as one strolls.
For bargain hunters, the Foire Sainte-Croix is an exceptional event: the concentration of flea market dealers and antique dealers on the same site, for three days, offers unique opportunities for discovery and purchase. Rare items are found alongside popular flea market finds, established antique dealers are neighbors to individuals clearing out their attics. The diversity is total, the abundance impressive.
The history of the Foire Sainte-Croix dates back to the 11th century, when the monks of the abbey of Lessay already organized fairs around the feast of the Holy Cross (September 14th). This thousand-year-old fair has crossed centuries, wars, economic crises, to be reborn stronger each time. It is now part of the intangible cultural heritage of Normandy.
Lessay (50430) owes its fame to two treasures: its 11th-century Romanesque abbey and its thousand-year-old fairs. The Abbey Church of Saint-TrinitΓ©, a masterpiece of Norman architecture, serves as a majestic backdrop for the fair. The fairgrounds surround the town and extend to the Lande de Lessay, a remarkable natural area that gives this territory its geographical uniqueness.
The town of Lessay, with its 2,000 permanent residents, sees its population multiply by twenty during the three days of the Foire Sainte-Croix. Hotels, restaurants, campsites, B&Bs: everything is fully booked weeks in advance. Visitors come from all over Normandy, Brittany, Γle-de-France, but also from Great Britain and Belgium, to not miss this exceptional event.
