Annual medieval fair of Châteaudun in July, with craft market and flea market in the historic setting of the Dunoise city
The Foire aux Laines is a major medieval festival organized every first weekend of July in Châteaudun. Heir to the old 19th-century wool fair, this festive event combines medieval companies, knight tournaments, street shows, and a craft market in the exceptional setting of the old town. An unmissable summer event in Eure-et-Loir.
Every first weekend of July, Châteaudun relives its Middle Ages. The Foire aux Laines, a direct descendant of the old trade fair held on the banks of the Loir since the 19th century, has become one of the largest medieval festivals in the Centre-Val de Loire region. The old town of Châteaudun, with its castle perched on its rocky spur overlooking the Loir, offers a naturally spectacular setting for this dive into history.
The "July Fair" of Châteaudun, renamed "Foire aux Laines" (Wool Fair) in the 19th century in reference to the wool trade from Beauce flocks, has gradually evolved into a full-fledged medieval festival. Today, it brings together professional medieval companies from all over France and Europe, attracts tens of thousands of visitors, and makes Châteaudun shine far beyond its departmental borders.
The program is dense and spectacular: equestrian tournaments and knight fights, falconry and wild animal training, period costume parades, jugglers, troubadours, medieval musicians, mimes, and actors… The Foire aux Laines mobilizes hundreds of artists and extras in costume to recreate the atmosphere of an authentic medieval fair. The Friday evening banquet-show is one of the highlights of the event.
At the heart of the event, the medieval market brings together artisans, roasters, spice merchants, weavers, potters, blacksmiths, and other ancient trades. Visitors can taste medieval-inspired culinary specialties, buy handmade creations and flea market items in the spirit of the old fair. This market is an opportunity to discover ancient know-how and bring back an authentic souvenir.
Châteaudun is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Its castle, built between the 12th and 16th centuries, overlooks the Loir valley from its promontory. The collegiate church of La Madeleine, the half-timbered houses of the old town, and the picturesque alleys complete this exceptional heritage that serves as the natural setting for the Foire aux Laines.
The Foire aux Laines is held every first weekend of July in Châteaudun. Detailed program on the official website foireauxlaines-chateaudun.fr. Paid entry. Food and drinks available on site.
Foire aux Laines 2026 in Châteaudun, medieval festival on July 4th and 5th. Medieval companies, tournaments, craft market, street shows in the old Dunoise town.
