Grand fair of peddlers and stallholders in Estang, medieval bastide of Bas-Armagnac
The Foire aux Camelots d'Estang (32240) is a traditional commercial event organized every autumn in this medieval bastide of Bas-Armagnac. Heir to the great fairs of Gascony, it brings together peddlers, stallholders, and traveling merchants who offer textiles, household goods, hardware, local products, and bric-a-brac in the streets and on the village square, at the foot of the historic listed arenas.
The Foire aux Camelots in Estang perpetuates an ancestral commercial tradition in Gascony. Every autumn, this village in Bas-Armagnac hosts traveling merchants, peddlers, and stallholders who set up in the streets and the village square for a day of popular commerce. The term 'camelot', from old French, refers to these itinerant merchants who travel from fair to fair, hawking their wares with a typically Gascon flair for salesmanship.
Fairs of peddlers are a fundamental element of rural culture in the Southwest. Long before supermarkets and online shopping, these fairs were the main way for country dwellers to acquire textiles, kitchen utensils, tools, haberdashery, and essential goods. The Estang fair keeps this tradition alive by offering a varied selection: clothing, linens, household items, hardware, toys, local products, and all sorts of bric-a-brac.
The former castelnau of Estang, founded in the 13th century, offers a remarkable setting for this fair. The central square, the medieval grid-like streets, and the proximity of the historic listed Jean Bartherotte arenas and the 12th-century Romanesque Notre-Dame church create a unique atmosphere. Visitors combine the pleasure of shopping with the discovery of the architectural heritage of this Gascon bastide, the boundaries of its ancient fortified enclosure still perfectly legible.
Located between Eauze and Nogaro, Estang is in the heart of Bas-Armagnac, a land of vineyards and cellars. The November fair is part of the Gers autumn fair calendar, a traditional period for stocking up before winter. It is also the season for Armagnac distillations, fat markets, and the first cool evenings by the fire β an ideal context for a fair that evokes the Gascony of yesteryear.
Beyond commerce, the fair of peddlers is an essential moment of socialization in small rural communities. People meet, chat, bargain, and share a coffee or a glass of Armagnac. The peddlers, with their loud voices and spectacular demonstrations, liven up the streets and bring a touch of popular theater to this day that is part of Gascon identity.
