Specialized flea market for tapestries and old books in Estang, a medieval bastide in Bas-Armagnac
Estang, a medieval bastide in Bas-Armagnac, hosts a themed flea market dedicated to tapestry and books in the spring. This unique event, which stands out from traditional car boot sales due to its specialization, attracts a discerning audience of informed amateurs, hunters of old books, textile collectors, and decorative art enthusiasts, in a remarkable heritage setting.
The Estang flea market is distinguished by its focus on two complementary worlds: tapestry—an ancestral textile art that finds a particular echo in the Southwest—and old books. Exhibitors offer furnishing tapestries, canvases, embroideries, antique fabrics, as well as rare editions, illustrated books, art books, and collectible literature. A concept that attracts both decorators and bibliophiles.
Estang is an old castelnau founded in the 13th century, whose medieval urban structure remains perfectly legible: grid-like streets, fortified walls whose limits are still marked by current streets, and moats replaced by promenades. The village has two remarkable heritage treasures: the 12th-century Romanesque Church of Notre-Dame, listed as a historical monument since 1998, and the Jean Bartherotte arena, built in the early 20th century from solid oak by the local population, classified as a historical monument in 1994.
Located between Eauze and Nogaro, Estang is in the heart of Bas-Armagnac, a wine-growing region renowned for the production of Armagnac eau-de-vie. This land of vines, forests, and hills is also a land of 'courses landaises'—the Estang arena still hosts four races a year—and village festivals that punctuate local life. The March flea market is part of this tradition of events that animate the town throughout the year.
With opening hours from 10:30 AM to 6 PM, the Estang Tapestry and Books flea market is designed for a knowledgeable audience that takes the time to look, touch, leaf through, and discuss with exhibitors. It's an opportunity to find unique pieces in a historic setting, away from large commercial events. An authentic treasure-hunting experience, in the spirit of deep Gers.
