The big 15th August event in the heart of the Mézenc plateau
Every August 15th, the hamlet of Boussoulet, in the commune of Champclause (43260), hosts one of the liveliest village festivals in the Mézenc region. A car boot sale with one hundred to one hundred and forty exhibitors, bread from the village oven, a pétanque competition with €400 in prizes, cabbage soup in the evening (€14), and a family dance: a complete festive day organized by the festival committee.
In the hamlet of Boussoulet, in the commune of Champclause (43260) in the heart of the Mézenc plateau, August 15th is an institution. Every year, the local festival committee transforms this small village in Haute-Loire into a place for meeting, sharing, and conviviality that attracts hundreds of visitors from all over the region.
The Boussoulet car boot sale is one of the highlights of the day. Exhibitors are welcomed from 6 am: just show up with an ID and pay for your pitch on site (€5 for 5 linear meters). Past years have seen between 90 and 140 exhibitors depending on the event, a remarkable number for a mountain hamlet. The offerings are varied: country furniture, old tools, crockery, clothes, toys, and curiosities of all kinds.
The sale of bread from the village oven is one of the symbols of this event. The wood-fired bread, prepared by the volunteers of the festival committee, is offered to visitors throughout the day. This baking tradition perpetuates ancient know-how and brings an authentic and warm touch to the festival.
The afternoon is marked by the doubles pétanque competition, with a total prize pool of €400 – enough to attract teams from all over Haute-Loire. In the evening, the traditional cabbage soup is served near the church at a price of €14, accompanied by a glass with the festival committee's logo offered to each guest. The day ends with music and a family dance, a tradition that brings together all generations until the end of the evening.
The Boussoulet Festival is much more than a car boot sale: it reflects a vibrant and supportive rural community, capable of mobilizing its volunteers to offer a memorable day to its residents and visitors. On the Mézenc plateau, at over 1,000 meters altitude, this annual August 15th event is an enchanted interlude that combines gastronomic heritage, festivity, and Auvergne conviviality.
