Wood-fired bread and fouée, vide-greniers at Niré hamlet
Niré-le-Dolent is a charming hamlet on Loudun's outskirts towards Angers. The Amis de Niré association has held its Bread and Fouée Festival for several years, combining traditional gastronomy with vide-greniers along Rue de Maison Neuve. Next edition: Sunday 17 May 2026, 8am-6:30pm.
Fouée, a Loire Valley/Anjou specialty, is a small bread disc baked in a wood-fired oven that puffs up and is opened to be filled with rillettes, mogette beans, fresh cheese, butter-salt, or jam. The festival celebrates it fresh from a restored traditional oven, with sourdough bread too.
Alongside the feast, vide-greniers stretches along Rue de Maison Neuve. €1 per linear metre (with vehicle), advance registration required. Very affordable pricing reflects the community spirit.
One charm of the festival: discovering Niré's many historic farm entrances. Well-preserved rural character: ancient farm buildings, exposed stone, tuffeau porches - witnesses to centuries of Loudunais farming. Bar runs in a restored barn.
Niré-le-Dolent is part of Loudun commune, sub-prefecture of northern Vienne, birthplace of Théophraste Renaudot and scene of the Urbain Grandier affair. Old town around the square tower is worth a visit.
Arrive 8-9am for chining. Bread and fouées best between 11am-2pm (ovens full throttle). Cash. Exhibitors must register in advance.
