15 August Acadian Festival at Archigny, flea market and Acadian traditions
Every 15 August, Archigny (86210) celebrates its Acadian Festival, one of Vienne's most singular heritage events, run by the Cousins Acadiens du Poitou. Flea market, traditional Acadian music, historical events, producer stands and friendly meals make this day a unique French celebration of Poitou's Acadian heritage. 2026 edition expected Saturday 15 August.
Archigny (86210) is one of rare French villages that can claim an authentic Acadian identity. In 1773, 58 Acadian families refugees from Canada after the Great Upheaval (1755) settled here under the Marquis de Pérusse des Cars, building the famous Acadian Line — an exceptional alignment of half-timbered farms over 7 km. Each year, Les Cousins Acadiens du Poitou keep this memory alive with the Acadian Festival, traditionally around 15 August (Acadian national day). 2025 held on 15 August; 2026 expected same date.
Not a classic flea market: a true heritage and cultural festival with international dimension (Canadian Acadians come yearly). The flea market is one component alongside Acadian music concerts, dances, historical events and traditional meals.
15 August has been the Acadian national day since 1881 (Our Lady of the Assumption chosen as patron at the First Acadian National Convention). At Archigny, this date gathers descendants of Poitou Acadian families, Canadian Acadians (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick), and all lovers of this singular history. Atmosphere is both festive and moving.
Built from 1773, a unique French ensemble: 58 farms aligned over a 7 km straight road, each initially identical (main room, stable, bread oven). Colony didn't endure (many Acadians left for Louisiana from 1785), but farms remain, some remarkably preserved. The Maison de l'Acadie at La Puye presents this history.
The association keeps links between Poitevins of Acadian descent and international Acadian community. Year-round trips, exchanges and events with this festival as centrepiece.
Arrive early. Bring food or book traditional meal. Light jacket for cool evenings. Camera and open ears: Acadian music is wonderful. Visit the Acadian Line (ideally pre-event to devote time).
Part of the international Acadian celebrations network. Draws visitors from Canada, Louisiana and all France. A rare chance to discover a living cultural diaspora: music, cuisine, poignant history, traditions.
