37th edition, between Comtat white asparagus and Provençal hunting
For over thirty years, Mormoiron has celebrated its asparagus fair, a unique day marrying terroir festival and flea market. On the last Sunday of April, Place du Clos and the village alleys echo to the voices of Comtat white-asparagus producers, private exhibitors and Provençal musicians. About 80 exhibitors, free tastings, cooking workshops, a best-bunch contest, refreshments and food complete the programme. A festive, gourmet date at the foot of Mont Ventoux.
Mormoiron, perched between the Auzon and the foothills of Mont Ventoux, is known for two treasures: its ochre quarries (long exploited for painter's earth) and its white asparagus, among the finest in Provence. The filtering sands, dry heat and sunlight give Mormoiron asparagus its delicacy, tenderness and touch of sweetness. The fair has celebrated it every spring for 37 years.
The first fair was held in the late 1980s on the initiative of the Comité des Fêtes and local producers to showcase a threatened know-how. Over the years: producers' market, free tastings, cooking workshops, best-bunch contest, music. A flea market was added, broadening the audience.
Mostly private sellers from Mormoiron and nearby villages: bric-Ã -brac, clothing, books, records, crockery, small furniture, toys, decoration. White-asparagus growers occupy the central square, sometimes alongside winegrowers, olive producers, beekeepers and cheesemakers.
Free tastings of asparagus prepared in several ways — steamed with olive-oil vinaigrette, gratin, risotto. Cooking workshops. A best-bunch contest. Provençal music throughout.
Entirely free. Families come for the animations, crafts, tastings and flea market. At the end of the day, visitors leave with asparagus, honey, a bottle of Ventoux wine and a few finds.
