Saint-Médard-la-Rochette, a commune formed by the merger with La Rochette in 1972, holds exceptional architectural heritage for such a small village. The Saint-Médard church, a classified historic monument, dates from the 11th-12th centuries and was fortified in the 14th-15th centuries. Its defensive tower built on the apse retains a cruciform loophole, a vestige of medieval turmoil. Inside, the stone altar rests on Gallo-Roman columns, and the granite baptismal fonts are adorned with sawtooth and ogee patterns, testifying to ancestral craftsmanship.
The Saint-Médard-la-Rochette flea market is also an opportunity to enjoy the refreshments and food offered throughout the day. Visitors can taste local Creuse specialties in a rural setting, amidst the granite houses of the village and the surrounding rolling countryside. Registration for exhibitors is by telephone, and the family atmosphere of this event makes it a popular summer gathering in Creuse.
Located just 10 kilometers from Aubusson, a city world-renowned for its tapestry, inscribed as intangible heritage by UNESCO, Saint-Médard-la-Rochette benefits from a prime location. Bargain hunters can extend their day by visiting the International Tapestry City or by taking a walk along the Creuse River, which winds through the department's green landscapes.
