Flea market on the Place du Champ de Foire in Châtillon-sur-Indre, medieval town of Berry
The brocante of Châtillon-sur-Indre takes over the Place du Champ de Foire, a vast esplanade at the foot of the perched medieval town. Exhibitors, professional second-hand dealers and individuals, offer antique furniture, trinkets, tableware, books, tools, toys, vintage clothing and various curiosities. The setting is remarkable: the silhouette of the 12th-century cylindrical keep and the ramparts of the upper town overlook the stalls of the flea market.
Châtillon-sur-Indre is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in the Indre department. The Tour César keep, an imposing 12th-century cylindrical tower, was built by Henri II Plantagenêt. The Notre-Dame church, with its exceptional Romanesque frescoes, the Saint-Pierre chapel and the remains of the ramparts bear witness to the strategic importance of this stronghold which controlled the crossing of the Indre.
The Indre valley, between Châtillon and Loches, is dotted with fortified villages and castles that tell the turbulent history of the border between the domains of the Plantagenêts and the Capétiens. Châtillon-sur-Indre, with its flea market on the Champ de Foire, perpetuates the age-old tradition of fairs and markets that animated these medieval strongholds.
Châtillon-sur-Indre is located on the D975, 40 km northwest of Châteauroux and 25 km east of Loches.
