Every first Sunday of September, the town of Hochfelden organizes its traditional autumn braderie, one of the major back-to-school shopping events in northern Alsace. The streets of the city center transform into a vast open-air market where stationary and itinerant merchants offer their items at discounted prices. The event, very popular in the Pays de Hanau, attracts thousands of visitors each year from Saverne, Haguenau, Strasbourg, and all the surrounding communes.
The Hochfelden braderie stands out for the diversity of its offer: clothing for the whole family, shoes, leather goods, costume jewelry, tableware, household items, toys, tools, local craft products, Alsatian specialties and regional products. City center shops actively participate by destocking their collections and offering exclusive deals. The event thus combines the advantages of a large car boot sale, a commercial braderie, and a popular festival. Itinerant vendors from Alsace, Moselle, and Lorraine complete the offering with their specialties.
Located in the Pays de Hanau, halfway between Strasbourg and Saverne, Hochfelden (3,700 inhabitants) is famous for housing the Météor Brewery, the oldest independent family brewery in Alsace, founded in 1640. This stopover town on the Marne-Rhine Canal preserves an interesting heritage with its Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur church, its synagogue, and beautiful Alsatian houses. The city center streets, ideally arranged around the main square, offer a perfect setting for the annual braderie and the traditional Messti that accompanies it.
The autumn braderie is traditionally coupled with the annual Messti of Hochfelden, which animates the city with its fairground rides, attractions, and stands. Families thus enjoy a full day mixing shopping, bargain hunting, children's entertainment, and Alsatian catering (tarte flambée, sausages, fries, pretzels, Météor beer of course!). The celebration continues all day and attracts a large and enthusiastic family audience. An event that marks the return to school in good spirits.
The Hochfelden Autumn Braderie returns on Sunday, September 6, 2026 in the city center streets. Several hundred exhibitors, traditional Messti, Alsatian catering. Free admission.
