L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, Marseille, Saint-Tropez: PACA hunts for the Ascension weekend

From L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue to Saint-Tropez via Cadenet and Marseille, 11 PACA flea-market picks for the Ascension long weekend: antique dealers, giant flea markets, village fairs.

The Ascension long weekend is one of the great hunting weekends in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur: high-end antique dealers bring out their best pieces, the perched villages of the Luberon and the Var open their squares to private sellers, and the major weekly flea markets of Marseille, Saint-Étienne-du-Grès and L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue run at full capacity. Our pick this week is the L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue Sunday antiques market on May 17: Europe's third-largest antiques hub, after London and Saint-Ouen, alone justifies the trip — but the whole region plays the game over these four days.

L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue Sunday antiques market (Vaucluse)

Every Sunday, the L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue antiques market spreads dozens of professional dealers along Avenue des 4 Otages, beneath the village's iconic waterwheels and canals. The Vaucluse town is officially Europe's third antiques capital, after London and Saint-Ouen, and the Sunday market is its year-round backbone. Provençal furniture, Moustiers faience, silverware, paintings and curiosities — the quality bar is markedly higher than a regular vide-grenier. May 17 also unlocks the permanent dealer villages (Le Quai de la Gare, L'Isle aux Brocantes, Le Village des Antiquaires). Set aside a full day.

Allées de la Liberté flea market in Cannes (Alpes-Maritimes)

Every Saturday and Sunday, the Allées de la Liberté Charles de Gaulle flea market takes over the heart of Cannes, opposite the Old Port and a stone's throw from the Croisette. Professional dealers set up under the plane trees: porcelain, crystal, period books, jewellery, Belle Époque trinkets and Cannes-golden-age collectibles. One of the chicest fixtures of the Riviera, drawing both Croisette-passing curious and serious collectors from Monaco and the Italian Riviera. Take advantage of the Ascension weekend — right after the Croisette buzz — to chine in a still-buzzing city without the red-carpet hotel rates.

Menton Antique Dealers' Market (Alpes-Maritimes)

On the Mail du Bastion, facing the sea and the colourful old town, the Menton antique dealers' market runs every Friday, including May 15. Vintage Riviera postcards, Belle Époque bric-à-brac, French and Italian books, curiosities sometimes coming from across the border: the lemon city plays its franco-Ligurian crossroads identity to the hilt. The setting is glorious, between ochre old-town façades and the bay running down to Ventimiglia. A great option if you start the long weekend on the Italian side, or if you extend the morning with lunch on the harbour.

Marseille Flea Market at Cap Pinède (Bouches-du-Rhône)

The Marseille Flea Market, established since 1988 on the former Alsthom industrial site at Cap Pinède (15th arrondissement), is simply the largest flea market in southern France: 17,000 sqm of retail space, 4 hectares, over 1,000 traders, 100,000+ weekly visitors. You'll find a permanent gallery of around forty antique dealers, an enormous consignment store, popular brocante halls and a dedicated vintage and mid-century quarter. The Ascension weekend is traditionally one of the year's liveliest. Plan at least three hours on site and a haggle-ready budget — it's THE Mediterranean flea-market institution, accessible by metro from the Old Port.

Place des Lices market in Saint-Tropez (Var)

Twice a week, including Saturdays, the legendary Place des Lices in Saint-Tropez turns into a hunters' village under its century-old plane trees. Antique dealers, vintage textile merchants, Provençal-object sellers, marine-furniture specialists: the selection is demanding, the prices Tropezian, but the vibe stays authentic between the pétanque games and the Café des Arts terraces. A dream chance to chine in the very setting of André Villers and Brigitte Bardot's photographs, mid-Ascension weekend, just before the gulf's summer saturation.

Vallouise-Pelvoux Antiques Fair (Hautes-Alpes)

On Saturday May 16, the Vallouise-Pelvoux antiques fair gathers professional dealers in this mountain village at 1,170 metres, gateway to the Écrins National Park. Alpine furniture, old tableware, pastoral-life objects and collectors' pieces line up in the Gyronde valley, dominated by 3,000-metre peaks. One of the few quality antique fairs in the Écrins massif at this time of year, and an excellent excuse to combine hunting with hiking in the heart of the national park, in a far calmer setting than the coast.

Puces de Provence in Saint-Étienne-du-Grès (Bouches-du-Rhône)

In the heart of the Alpilles, the Puces de Provence in Saint-Étienne-du-Grès hold their big weekly unpacking every Sunday from 6am to 1:30pm. With up to 400 traders, dealers and stallholders, it's one of the department's largest flea markets: Provençal furniture, knick-knacks, tableware, vintage clothing, old books, peasant tools and decorative objects spread across the village market square. Proximity to Arles, the Baux-de-Provence and Saint-Rémy makes it a perfect stop for Alpilles weekenders. Arrive early — the best pieces vanish at dawn.

Cave de Cantarelle flea market in Saint-Maximin (Var)

A true Sunday institution in the Provence Verte, the Cave de Cantarelle flea market and brocante takes place every Sunday in Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume, on the old road to Pourrières. Its originality: it unfolds at a working wine cooperative, deep in the Provençal vineyards between Aix-en-Provence and the Var. Private sellers and professional dealers settle on a vast site with parking and refreshment bar, in a rural, friendly atmosphere very different from the urban flea markets of Marseille or L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. Ideal for combining hunting, Coteaux-Varois-en-Provence tasting and a walk around the Sainte-Baume.

41st Mineral, Fossil, Meteorite and Jewellery Fair in La Garde (Var)

The Mineral, Fossil, Meteorite and Jewellery Fair of La Garde celebrates its 41st edition on Saturday May 16 and Sunday May 17 at the salle Gérard Philipe. French and international exhibitors, rare pieces, raw minerals, certified fossils, authenticated meteorites and natural-stone jewellery: a benchmark event in the Var, drawing both seasoned collectors and curious families. One of the oldest specialised fairs in the region, where you can still buy a real collector's piece at a reasonable price — or simply introduce children to mineralogy and palaeontology.

Le Brusc vide-grenier in Six-Fours-les-Plages (Var)

On Sunday May 17, the Le Brusc vide-grenier in Six-Fours-les-Plages hosts 110 private sellers on the harbour parking, 8am to 5pm. Facing the colourful fishing boats of the old port, the Embiez island and the Grand Rouveau, it's one of the loveliest hunting backdrops on the Var coast. The atmosphere is family-friendly and Mediterranean to the core: bric-Ă -brac, tableware, toys, clothing, second-hand nautical gear and assorted finds. Combine with a stroll around the port, even a boat crossing to the Embiez if the weather plays along.

Cadenet Vide ses Greniers (Vaucluse)

On Sunday May 17, the entire village of Cadenet, in the heart of the Luberon, joins in for Cadenet Vide ses Greniers. From Cours Voltaire to the surrounding alleys, residents and visitors browse stalls from 8am to 5pm, in the typical buzz of this Provençal village famous for its tambourinaire and its fountain. This is village-scale: mostly private sellers, real bargains, no antique-dealer pretensions — but with the unbeatable charm of a Luberon village in full Sunday-spring effervescence. Park early and explore on foot: it's also the perfect chance to visit the castle and the Arcole drummer statue.
