Bargain hunting in the heart of the Marais Poitevin
Vouillé-les-Marais is a rural commune of nearly 800 inhabitants in southern Vendée, in the heart of the Marais Poitevin. The annual flea market on 17 May 2026 is one of those small events that punctuate local community life. Held in the village centre, it draws individuals, amateur dealers and local hunters in a laid-back atmosphere.
The principle: empty cupboards and attics to give objects a second life. For hunters, a chance to find crockery, books, toys, small furniture, clothes or decor at attractive prices.
Vouillé-les-Marais sits a few km from Maillezais, famed for its abbey ruins, and the Damvix landing stage. The Marais Poitevin, France's second-largest wetland after the Camargue, stretches around the village with its canals and pollarded ash trees. This aquatic maze is nicknamed "the Green Venice" and is best explored by flat-bottomed boat.
Head to the Venise Verte landing stages (Maillezais, Damvix, Arçais) for a boat ride on the canals. Maillezais Abbey is worth the detour. Local gastronomy lovers can try marsh eel, snails or the famous mogette bean.
Arrive early; bring cash and a big bag; book a boat ride in advance to round out the visit.
