Every May 1st, the village of Saint-Illide (15310) perpetuates a tradition of over a century with its May 1st Fair, of which the car boot sale is one of the highlights. This popular event, organized by the May 1st Fair Animation Committee, brings together about forty exhibitors on the Place de l'Église and in the village streets. Individuals and bargain hunters meet in a festive atmosphere for this spring day of treasure hunting and discoveries.
The Saint-Illide fair goes far beyond a simple car boot sale. The program includes a traditional market with local producers, winegrowers, flowers and plants, clothes and shoes, as well as exhibitions of poultry, vintage and classic cars, and agricultural machinery. Visitors can also watch demonstrations of basket weaving and chainsaw sculpting, while children enjoy games, pony rides, and a carousel.
From 9 am, the baking of the miralière brioche in the wood-fired oven fills the Place de l'Église with its aroma, perpetuating a Cantal pastry tradition. At noon, a friendly meal is served in the village hall, bringing together locals and visitors around local specialties. This gastronomic dimension reinforces the authentic and warm character of the event.
Saint-Illide is a rural village in the Cère valley, in the canton of Mauriac, halfway between Aurillac and Mauriac. The village retains traditional Cantal architecture with its church and stone houses. The May 1st fair is the unmissable event of the year, attracting visitors from all over the region for a day of celebration, market, and conviviality.
