Bargain hunting and gardening in the Monts d'Alban
Every spring, the village of Alban, at the gateway to the Monts d'Alban and the Tarn Ségala, comes alive for a morning of bargain hunting and gardening. The flea market is paired with a flower, plant and producers' market that draws bargain hunters, gardeners and families looking for an authentic, friendly, fragrant gathering typical of Tarn villages.
Nestled between Albi and the Viaur river, the village of Alban opens its streets every late May for a flea market paired with a flower, plant and local producers' fair. This original formula, much loved in the Tarn, draws a mixed crowd: bargain hunters looking for a find, gardeners seeking tomato plants, herbs or hardy perennials suited to the Ségala climate, and Sunday strollers happy to wander under the blossoming trees of the village square.
On the flea market side, private sellers display on the sidewalks of the village centre: old crockery, household linen, childhood toys, clothes, comics, small furniture, tools, decor and family bric-a-brac. On the market side, nurseries and growers from the Tarn and neighbouring Aveyron offer vegetable plants, seasonal flowers, roses, shrubs and aromatic herbs. Local producers round out the offer with honey from the Monts d'Alban, sheep's cheese, jams, farmhouse charcuterie and other regional specialities.
The event runs all Sunday, with a buzz particularly strong in the morning. Visitors linger at the refreshment stand, enjoy a traditional tripoux breakfast served at dawn, and sit down for a countryside lunch at midday. Giant wooden games are often set up for children, and the soundscape - conversations, music and birdsong - gives the whole event a distinctly village charm.
Driven by Alban's volunteers and associations, this flea market is a much-anticipated fixture of the Tarn calendar. Every spring, it kicks off the good season in the Monts d'Alban and lets everyone head home with a find, a plant to pot up or simply the memory of a beautiful day shared.
