Bargain hunt in a bend of the Tarn river, in one of the valley's loveliest villages
Nestled in a spectacular loop of the river Tarn, Ambialet hosts its flea market and spring market through the village lanes around the presbytery. The setting, one of the most striking in the department, gives this annual event run by the village festivities committee an unmatched atmosphere. Local producers, craftspeople, private sellers and bargain hunters gather on a Sunday in May to celebrate the return of warm days together.
Few flea markets boast such a breathtaking backdrop. Ambialet is famous for its peninsula formed by a perfect bend in the Tarn river, which loops around the village for almost two kilometres before returning within a few metres of its starting point. Old houses, a hilltop Benedictine priory and the river bridge combine into a picture-postcard scene where the festivities committee market is set up each spring.
The formula works beautifully: on the same day, the spring market and the flea market run side by side around the presbytery and the adjoining lanes. Local producers offer vegetable seedlings, flowers, honey, cheeses, charcuterie and Tarn specialities. Private sellers unpack bric-a-brac, toys, clothing, books, crockery and small furniture. This double bill draws a broad family audience, keen on both treasure hunting and regional produce.
The flea market is a great excuse to take your time in Ambialet: climb up to the priory for a dizzying view of the meander, stroll along the banks of the Tarn, discover the remains of the medieval castle. The village belongs to the Monts d'Alban and Villefranchois community of communes and is part of the remarkable natural heritage of the Tarn valley.
Long organised by the Ambialet Festivities Committee, the event retains a strongly local feel. Families, retired visitors and hikers drawn by the setting all mingle here. The mood is relaxed, conversations spark easily over an object or a product. The volunteer-run refreshment stand offers light fare, and admission is entirely free.
Wear comfortable shoes: the lanes of Ambialet are steep and cobbled. Arrive early to park, as space is limited in the village. Combine your visit with lunch at one of the riverside restaurants and, why not, an afternoon canoe trip on the Tarn.
