The evening bargain hunt in the heart of the Maures massif
Each September, Place Neuve in La Garde-Freinet hosts a lively night-time flea market running from morning until 9pm. Organised by Vivons La Garde-Freinet, the event combines bargain hunting, live music, a clown and a children's face painting workshop, set in one of the most beautiful villages of the Maures massif.
Tucked into the heart of the Maures massif between cork oaks and chestnut trees, the village of La Garde-Freinet hosts an annual night flea market on its famous Place Neuve. The event, called "Vide-grenier en fête", goes far beyond a simple sale: it is a genuine village celebration that extends the summer season into the night.
From 8am to 9pm, private sellers spread out their finds under the plane trees, giving bargain hunters unusually long hours to browse, compare and negotiate. At dusk, the atmosphere shifts: street lamps glow, music takes over and families flock in to enjoy a one-of-a-kind blend of flea market and summer entertainment.
The La Garde-Freinet flea market remains heavily private-led. Expect books, vinyl records, Provençal crockery, retro toys, vintage clothing, bric-a-brac and small furniture, along with a handful of local professionals bringing curios, small antiques and ceramics.
La Garde-Freinet is one of the flagship villages of the Maures massif, a short drive from the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. Its old centre, fountains and Saracen heritage make it a perfect extended day trip. The shaded, central Place Neuve provides a natural setting for this friendly event.
Arrive early to grab the best finds and avoid the heat, or in late afternoon for the magical day-to-night transition. Bring cash (many sellers do not accept cards), a sturdy bag and a tape measure if you are eyeing furniture. Parking is on the outskirts of the village.
