Summer browsing in an exceptional medieval bastide

Lauzerte, perched on its hill in the Quercy blanc, is one of the oldest bastides in southwestern France, founded in the late 12th century by the Count of Toulouse. Classified among France's Most Beautiful Villages, it charms with its magnificent Place des Cornières and its lanes lined with limestone and half-timbered houses.

An event reserved for private sellers

True to its philosophy, the Lauzerte flea market is exclusively for private sellers. About fifty exhibitors offer the traditional range: china, toys, clothes, books, vinyl, curios, small furniture, regional Quercy items.

An exceptional heritage setting

The Place des Cornières, one of the most beautiful in the southwest, displays its medieval arcades around the stalls. Saint-Barthélemy church dominates the upper town, and side lanes descend to the ramparts with their views over the Quercy valley. The village is also an important stop on the Way of Saint James.

Bastille Day revisited by bargain hunting

The 14 July date is no accident: France's National Day offers an ideal holiday context, and Lauzerte lends itself beautifully to this festive day.

Tips

The medieval centre is pedestrian and perched. Park at the village gates and walk up. Bring a hat, water, cash and good shoes. Book lunch in advance.
