The great antique dealers' rendezvous on Place des Cornières
Every 15 August, the medieval town of Lauzerte, classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, hosts its famous antiques fair on the sublime Place des Cornières and in the lanes of the upper village. Around twenty passionate antique dealers offer old furniture, faience, collectibles and curiosities in an exceptional medieval setting. An unmissable day of bargain hunting and heritage in the Quercy blanc.
Perched on a rocky spur in the heart of the Quercy blanc, Lauzerte is one of the most beautiful bastides in Tarn-et-Garonne. Founded in the 12th century by the Count of Toulouse, it is classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, a distinction reserved for only 155 villages in the whole of France. Its historic heart organised around the Saint-Barthélemy church and the sublime Place des Cornières offers one of the finest medieval ensembles in the region. A major stage on the Camino de Santiago, Lauzerte radiates a unique atmosphere, blending heritage, contemporary art and the Quercy way of life.
Every 15 August, on Assumption Day, Lauzerte transforms. Place des Cornières and the cobbled streets of the upper village have hosted for many years a great antiques fair organised by the Les Amis de Lauzerte association.
Unlike a classic flea market, the 15 August fair favours quality over quantity. Around twenty passionate professional antique dealers display their finest pieces: old furniture (wardrobes, sideboards, secretaries, armchairs), faience (Quercy, Moustiers, Sarreguemines), porcelain, glassware, lighting, mirrors, paintings, marine items, old farming tools, basketry, militaria, antique toys, vinyl records.
The association Les Amis de Lauzerte, which brings together heritage enthusiasts and dedicated volunteers, has run this major event for many years. Beyond the 15 August fair, the association organises exhibitions, concerts and activities throughout the year.
After the fair, at 7 pm, comes the famous Gourmet Thursday on Place des Cornières (when 15 August falls on a Thursday): outdoor catering, festive atmosphere and conviviality late into the evening. The cafés and restaurants under the arcades extend the experience throughout the day.
A day in Lauzerte is not just about the fair. Take the opportunity to visit the Saint-Barthélemy church, stroll the cobbled lanes, admire the half-timbered houses and enjoy the panorama over the Quercy blanc.
