Chining at the foot of a medieval city

Chauvigny is one of the most spectacular medieval cities of Poitou-Charentes, famous for its five fortresses dominating the town. Its spring flea market sets up on the Esplanade du Peuron, a large space below the upper town with breathtaking views over the castles. The 2026 edition runs on Sunday 3 May from 7 am, with a complementary date on 19 April.

The Peuron Esplanade, an ideal setting

Wide, flat, easy access, plenty of parking, just below the medieval upper town. You can combine chining and cultural visits the same morning. The upper town (baronial castle, Saint-Pierre collegiate church) is walking distance from the esplanade.

Chauvigny, city of five fortresses

Essential for Poitou Middle Ages fans. Five medieval fortresses: baronial castle, Harcourt castle, Montléon castle, Gouzon (museum), Flin tower. Saint-Pierre collegiate (11th-12th c.) is a Romanesque jewel with carved capitals. Summer: Géants du Ciel falconry show.

Chining tips

Come early — 7 am sees first sellers set up, best deals go fast. Bring breakfast — drinks stand opens later. Busy May 3 long weekend — park further and walk. Comfortable shoes (full tour ~1h30).

Access and parking

25 km east of Poitiers via N151 (25 min). Signposted at town entrance. Free parking around.

Upper town: fortress ruins, Saint-Pierre collegiate. Further: Saint-Savin Romanesque abbey (UNESCO frescoes, 20 km), Angles-sur-l'Anglin (Most Beautiful Village of France, 35 km).
