Bargain hunting along the Tarn river in the Gaillac vineyard
Every 8 May, Brens' parents' association (APE) takes over the village centre, a stone's throw from the banks of the Tarn, for its traditional spring flea market. Between the Gaillac vines and the river, this family gathering welcomes around a hundred private sellers and offers bargain hunters a friendly day in aid of the local schools.
Brens, a Tarn village on the right bank of the Tarn river, sees its centre transform into a long bargain-hunting lane every 8 May. Organised for years by the Parents' Association (APE), the flea market unfolds along the streets that run down to the riverbanks, in the heart of the Gaillac vineyard. The scene is set: stone houses, rows of vines on the horizon, the Tarn winding below and a village atmosphere that gives the morning a special charm.
Private sellers dominate overwhelmingly: grandma's crockery, clothes, toys, books, comics, records, trinkets, small furniture, tools, baby items, decor and family bric-a-brac. A few semi-pros sometimes bring vintage pieces and curiosities. Prices stay accessible, in pure flea-market spirit: you browse more than you buy, you chat, and you head home with finds - often a plant, a flower or a treat from the schools.
Proceeds from the flea market, as well as the refreshment and food stalls run by volunteer parents, fund the year's school projects: outings, field trips, teaching materials, activities. This community dimension is much appreciated by visitors, who come as much to support the school as to hunt for bargains. The APE welcomes visitors with coffee and pastries in the morning, sausages and fries at lunchtime, then cakes and crêpes in the afternoon.
Between Gaillac vines, the Tarn's banks and a lively village centre, Brens' 8 May flea market is something of an official opening to the flea-market season in the Gaillac vineyard. Many visitors from neighbouring villages - Gaillac, Rivières, Lisle-sur-Tarn, Cahuzac-sur-Vère - take the chance to stroll around, then extend their day with a walk along the Tarn or a visit to a local winery.
