The 100% free and charitable flea market
The Gaillac Gratiferia is a flea market like no other: everything is free. Held twice a year on Place du Griffoul by the Gailla'sel association and the Ville de Gaillac, it invites visitors to drop off unused items and take whatever catches their eye without any money changing hands. An alternative, charitable and ecological flea market, now in its second decade at the heart of the Gaillac wine country.
Born from alternative economy movements, the Gratiferia (from the Latin 'gratis' and Spanish 'feria', 'fair') is a concept from Latin America: a fair where you give and take without money. In Gaillac, this practice has taken root for over ten years thanks to the Gailla'sel association, which runs a local exchange system (SEL) in the Gaillac area. The Ville de Gaillac has joined the event, now a regular fixture in Tarn community life.
The principle is as simple as it is radical: you come to drop off items in good condition that you no longer use - clothes, books, toys, crockery, trinkets, small appliances - and freely take what appeals to you from everything others have brought. No money changes hands, no barter is required: you can come empty-handed and leave with a treasure, or simply drop off without taking anything. The spirit is that of giving, reuse and fighting waste.
The Gratiferia sets up on Place du Griffoul, a historic square at the centre of Gaillac, which also hosts the weekly market. Lined with character houses and bustling with shops, it offers a perfect setting. The event takes place in the Noctambio Hall or under the arcades depending on the season.
Beyond a bargain, the Gratiferia carries a vision: decluttering without throwing away, giving objects a second life, building social bonds outside market logic. Spring (April) and autumn (October) editions have become highlights of the Gaillac calendar.
Visiting the Gratiferia is also a chance to discover Gaillac, the Tarn's wine capital, its Saint-Michel abbey, its museum and its vineyards.
Two Gratiferias scheduled in Gaillac in 2026: spring edition on 21 April, autumn edition on 20 October, both on Place du Griffoul from 3:30pm to 6:30pm. Unique concept in the Tarn, this free and charitable flea market invites everyone to drop off what they no longer use and take what they wish, in a spirit of sharing and anti-waste.
