Flea market and "vide commode" (wardrobe clear-out) in Mallemort, a Provençal village on the banks of the Durance
Every spring, the Mallemort village hall hosts the Vide Commode organized by the association Vivons Ensemble – Foyer Rural de Mallemort. This annual event invites individuals to clear out their wardrobes, chests of drawers, and attics to offer visitors a varied selection of second-hand items in a friendly, family atmosphere. The indoor format, protected from the unpredictable weather of late March, ensures comfort for both exhibitors and bargain hunters.
Mallemort is a historic Provençal village, nestled on the banks of the Durance and at the foot of the Luberon, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department. The old village, with its narrow streets and stone houses, is dominated by the Saint-Michel Church, a classical building constructed between 1751 and 1756. Above the village stand the ruins of a 12th-century castle, formerly owned by the bishops of Marseille until the Revolution. The old suspension bridge over the Durance, built between 1844 and 1848 during the reign of Louis-Philippe, is a remarkable historical monument that testifies to 19th-century engineering. At 300 meters long, it remains the oldest large bridge still standing over the Durance.
The Mallemort village hall, located at Place Raoul Coustet, offers a generous space to accommodate exhibitors and visitors. The "vide commode" format differs from traditional car boot sales in its intimate and covered nature: tables are set up in the municipal hall, allowing for comfortable browsing regardless of the weather. The atmosphere is that of a village where everyone knows each other, a mix of long-time residents and newcomers from the Luberon.
The stalls at the Vide Commode de Mallemort offer a wide variety of second-hand items:
The Vide Commode is organized by Vivons Ensemble, the Foyer Rural de Mallemort association, which works year-round to liven up the social and cultural life of the village. Volunteers and members mobilize to offer this event, open to all, in a spirit of sharing and social connection. Membership in the association allows for a preferential rate for table rental.
After the Vide Commode, visitors can stroll through the narrow streets of the old village, admire the panoramic view of the Durance from the Saint-Michel Church esplanade, or explore the old suspension bridge, a listed historical monument. A few kilometers away, the Luberon offers exceptional hiking opportunities, while the plain irrigated by the Craponne canal bears witness to Mallemort's prosperous agricultural past, once renowned for its carrots and melons. The Pont Royal golf course, designed by Severiano Ballesteros, is also located in the commune.
