October browsing in Grand Châtellerault
Thuré is a commune of around 2,100 inhabitants north of Châtellerault, in Grand Châtellerault urban community. The village has a favourable geography between the Vienne valley and the Loudunais plains. Thuré's Festival Committee, a cornerstone of local life, runs its annual October flea market — a much-awaited event.
Festival committees are a key institution of French village life. As associations (1901 law), their mission is to animate the commune through cultural, festive and solidarity events. At Thuré as elsewhere, the committee mobilises volunteers year-round: village festival, annual meals, kermesse, Christmas markets, and of course flea markets. These generate revenue to fund future activities.
One of 47 communes of Grand Châtellerault, vast urban community around the Vienne sub-prefecture. Village about 10 km northeast of Châtellerault; keeps rural identity with agglomeration dynamism.
Vienne's sub-prefecture and the department's second city, a dynamic urban hub (~30,000 inhabitants). Worth visiting: Henri-IV Bridge (1609, one of France's oldest), Royal Arms Manufactory (cultural site), Auto-Moto-Bike Museum (France's largest public collection), Blossac Theatre, Saint-Jacques church.
