Early summer bargain-hunting in the Breton marshes of Vendée
Soullans is a commune of about 4,000 inhabitants in the Breton marsh of Vendée, just a few kilometres from Challans and the beaches of Pays de Monts. Its June flea market is one of the early-summer fixtures of community life in north-west Vendée, between spring events and the start of the tourist season.
The 2026 edition is scheduled for Sunday 14 June. The market sets up in a central village location, welcoming a wide range of private sellers clearing attics, cellars and garages. It attracts locals as much as holidaymakers from the nearby Vendée coast.
Soullans is also worth a visit for its cultural heritage: this is where painter Charles Milcendeau (1872-1919), famous for his portraits of Maraîchins and Vendée interiors, lived and worked. His studio-house Bois-Durand is now a museum diving into late-19th-century marsh life.
Soullans lies in the typical Breton marsh landscape: waterways, wet meadows, low white houses with orange tiles. June mornings are mild, ideal for browsing.
Best finds happen early: sellers from 6am, first visitors from 7am. Peak around mid-morning. Bring cash, a big bag, and water.
After the market, head to Challans (5 km), the port of Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie (20 km), or the coast between Saint-Jean-de-Monts and Notre-Dame-de-Monts.
