Bargain hunting in a Provençal fishing port
Sanary, a small Var fishing port voted France's most beautiful market in 2018, blends authentic Mediterranean village charm with the family-resort feel. Its sheltered harbour, lined with brightly painted pointus and pastel façades, is one of the most photogenic spots of the Var coast.
The event runs on a private plot, repeated through the year to build a faithful crowd. The format stays modest and true to the spirit : private sellers clearing what they no longer use, hunters sniffing out finds. No commercial weight, no speculation : direct, simple, human.
Clothes, books, toys, tableware, small appliances, bric-a-brac, décor. Sanary's signature is the regular appearance of marine and Mediterranean items : beach gear, small glassware, cabanon relics, harbour photos, nautical-motif décor. A whiff of holiday hangs over the stalls in season.
Pair the flea market with a village visit : daily market on place de la République, harbour stroll, climb to chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Pitié, trip to Bendor island from nearby Bandol. Local fare – grilled sardines, poutargue, AOP Provence olive oil – rounds off the chinage day.
