Winter rendez-vous for Loudunais collectors
Each winter, the village of Chalais in the Loudunais hosts its all-collections fair and quality flea market, run by Anim's. A favourite with collectors — stamps, postcards, coins, figurines, militaria — plus quality brocante stalls. 2026 edition: Sunday 15 February 2026. Entry usually charged.
Chalais is a rural commune in the Loudunais, northwest Vienne. Despite its modest size, it's known in regional collecting circles thanks to its yearly all-collections fair with a quality flea market. Run by Anim's association, it draws a loyal enthusiasts crowd — numismatists, philatelists, figurine and postcard collectors, old-paper hunters, militaria fans, vintage advertising collectors. 2026: Sunday 15 February 2026, per le-vide-grenier.net.
Unlike most open-air Poitou flea markets, Chalais is indoors — perfect for its winter date. Roofed format protects sellers and visitors from February cold, ideal for fragile or valuable items. Stalls are tidy, pieces better presented than at outdoor brocantes, discussions with sellers more in-depth.
Very different from regular flea markets: visitors know exactly what they seek, grasp references, discuss provenance and rarity. Expertise matters; transactions can involve high-value pieces; exchanges between collectors are as valuable as purchases. For beginners, an excellent learning opportunity.
Loudunais, in the northwest of the department, is a rural area marked by Urbain Grandier (Loudun possession trials) and Théophraste Renaudot, born in Loudun. Loudun sub-prefecture is an art-and-history town. Chalais, smaller, sits in this quiet rural area of character villages, old farmsteads and small Romanesque churches.
Unlike most flea markets (often free), collection fairs usually charge a small entry fee (€1-3). This is standard practice and helps pay exhibitors who travel.
Arrive at opening for best finds — regulars know the stalls. Cash on hand (small and larger notes) for possibly substantial deals. Magnifier, price catalogue relevant to your passion can help.
Loudun (15 min): medieval heritage, square tower, Renaudot museum. Château de Ternay at Berrie nearby. Montmorillon, Chauvigny and Poitiers further but doable for a day.
