Sunday bargain hunting at the foot of the Sainte-Marie-Madeleine basilica
Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume is famous for its Sainte-Marie-Madeleine basilica, the masterpiece of Provençal Gothic, and stands as a lively crossroads of the Provence Verte. Set between Aix-en-Provence, Brignoles and the Sainte-Baume massif, it is a natural weekend stop for bargain hunters.
The recurring Sunday flea market, held in various spots across town, brings together private sellers, occasional dealers and loyal regulars. The 3 May and 4 October 2026 editions are among the confirmed highlights of the year.
Bargain hunting in Saint-Maximin takes on a special flavour beside the historic basilica, royal convent and medieval streets lined with colourful facades. Combine the morning hunt with a guided visit or a hike up to Mary Magdalene's cave in the Sainte-Baume massif.
Spring and autumn editions enjoy the best weather and liveliest crowds. The golden autumn light turns the square into a postcard scene, and the gentle Provençal ambiance invites long chats between sellers and browsers.
