A festival around white storks

Saint-Denis-du-Payré is a small Vendée village famous for its white storks: 42 breeding pairs counted in 2022. The commune hosts the Saint-Denis-du-Payré Marsh National Nature Reserve, an exceptional refuge for migratory and breeding birds. Each year the Stork Festival celebrates this unique natural heritage.

2026 edition on Sunday 26 April, peak stork-breeding season — ideal viewing time. Around 60 sellers at the flea market.

The white stork, Marsh emblem

White stork (Ciconia ciconia): a strong Poitevin Marsh symbol. Once nearly gone, it came back to breed naturally, notably around Saint-Denis. Spectacular nests on dedicated platforms, trees and chimneys. Watching their aerial ballet in nesting season is a real show.

Saint-Denis-du-Payré, Bird Village

Vendée commune of nearly 400, in the Poitevin Marsh between Luçon and Fontenay-le-Comte. Small size contrasts with its ecological importance: the 207-ha National Nature Reserve (created 1974) is one of France's leading protected wetlands. 'Village Oiseau' label, thousands of visitors yearly.

The Nature Reserve

207 ha of wet meadows, canals and pools. Over 200 bird species including white stork, black tern, lapwing, black-tailed godwit. Reserve house for discovery, guided outings regularly.

Extending the visit

Visit the Reserve and its welcome centre. Triaize, Chaillé-les-Marais, Luçon. Aiguillon Bay Nature Reserve (nearby) is one of Europe's largest migratory-stopover sites.
