The traditional Santerre spring flea market
Marcelcave, a village in the Santerre between Amiens and Villers-Bretonneux, hosts its annual spring flea market every year. From 6 am, the village centre streets come alive with exhibitors emptying attics and cupboards. An authentic event, typical of the Picardy tradition of open-air réderies.
Spring flea markets are a staple of the Picardy calendar from early March. Marcelcave's, scheduled for late March, is a well-established rendezvous for bargain hunters from the eastern Somme valley.
As is the Picardy tradition, exhibitors set up very early, from 6 am or even before. Loaded vehicles unload their goods in the half-light, trestles unfold, tarpaulins tighten. By daybreak, the market is already up and running.
The usual range of Picardy flea market goods: clothes, toys, books, crockery, small furniture, knick-knacks, vinyls, tools, garden equipment, with occasional finer pieces from deep attics.
Marcelcave is a small rural town in the Santerre, the great cereal plain east of Amiens. Like many villages in the region, it was deeply marked by WWI, destroyed during the Battle of the Somme and rebuilt in the 1920s.
Beyond bargain hunting, the Marcelcave flea market is a highlight of village life. Residents meet, share news, enjoy a coffee. Refreshments are served by local volunteers.
The 2026 edition of the Marcelcave spring flea market took place on Sunday 29 March 2026, from 6 am, in the village centre streets. Picardy exhibitors animated this open-air event, a regular rendezvous for Santerre bargain hunters.
On Sunday 29 March 2026, Marcelcave woke up at 6 am to the sound of car doors and unfolding trestles. The traditional spring flea market filled the centre streets with stalls held by villagers and bargain hunters from nearby.
Under cool but mild weather, early hunters, families and curious visitors passed through until late afternoon. The authentically Picardy atmosphere recalled the enduring charm of village flea markets.
