A village réderie in the Santerre

Fontaine-sous-Montdidier, a village of about 230 inhabitants nestled on the Picard plateau in southern Somme, holds its annual réderie every year. The 2026 edition is set for Sunday 20 September. A small, human-scale event, it is part of the long tradition of Picard village réderies that enliven the department's autumn, and draws bargain hunters and visitors from neighbouring communes.

The charm of the rural réderie

At this scale, the réderie retains its authentic character: residents setting out their items in front of their homes, neighbours meeting up, a relaxed atmosphere and friendly haggling. Stalls set up in the streets and squares of the village. You'll find the traditional Picard flea-market bric-a-brac: rustic furniture, country tableware, household linen, old tools, books, toys from several generations, grandmother's trinkets, postcards and second-hand clothing.

A day in the Grand Roye

The village belongs to the Grand Roye Community of Communes, which groups around thirty rural communes around the town of Roye. This intercommunality spans part of the Santerre, a farming plain with rich rural heritage. Visiting the réderie is a chance to discover this little-known territory: churches rebuilt after the Great War, traditional farmhouses, open landscapes typical of Picard large-scale farming.

A popular late-summer event

As always in village réderies, light catering is handled by local volunteers: fries, sausages, pancakes, hot and cool drinks. The atmosphere is that of a quiet village fair, where patient bargain hunters can make fine finds without a crowd. It is also an opportunity for visitors to discover a corner of the Somme rarely covered by classic tourist circuits.
