Grand flea market on Pentecost Monday in La Chaise-Dieu, ~200 exhibitors near the millennial abbey
Every Pentecost Monday, La Chaise-Dieu hosts one of the largest flea markets in Haute-Loire with around 200 exhibitors (60 professionals on Avenue de la Gare, 140 private individuals on Rue Saint-Martin). Organized by Collector 63, this market from 7 am to 5:30 pm is held in the heart of the medieval village, a stone's throw from the Benedictine abbey founded in 1044.
La Chaise-Dieu is one of the most remarkable villages in Haute-Loire. Perched at an altitude of 1,080 meters on the Livradois plateau, this medieval village of 700 inhabitants developed around one of the most imposing Benedictine abbeys in Auvergne, founded in 1044 by Robert de Turlande. The Saint-Robert Abbey, a listed historic monument, houses a majestic Gothic nave, a papal tomb (Clement VI), 144 carved oak stalls, and a famous "Danse Macabre" fresco. This exceptional site hosts a world-renowned classical music festival every summer.
It is in this exceptional heritage setting that one of the largest flea markets in Haute-Loire takes place every Pentecost Monday. Organized by Collector 63, a recognized specialist in organizing flea markets and brocantes in Auvergne, this event brings together around 200 exhibitors in the town center of La Chaise-Dieu and attracts visitors from all over the region.
The market is spread over two main axes of the village. Avenue de la Gare hosts flea market and antique professionals — about 60 exhibitors — offering antique furniture, collectible items, vintage tableware, paintings, old books, and various antiques. Rue Saint-Martin is reserved for private individuals — about 140 exhibitors — who offer their second-hand items at free prices. This complementarity between professionals and private individuals guarantees a rich and varied offering that satisfies both discerning collectors and families looking for bargains.
Browsing in La Chaise-Dieu means wandering through the streets of a preserved medieval village, with facades adorned with machicolations and mascarons, remains of fortified ramparts, and the imposing silhouette of the abbey overlooking the whole. This exceptional setting makes the Pentecost flea market much more than just a market: it is a cultural and heritage experience in its own right. Many visitors take the opportunity to visit the abbey before or after their shopping.
The market opens its doors at 7 am and runs until 5:30 pm. Exhibitors set up very early in the morning. Entry is free for visitors. Food is available in the town center's cafes and restaurants. Parking is available on the outskirts of the village. La Chaise-Dieu is accessible via the D906 from Ambert or the D498 from Brioude.
