The springtime bargain hunters' rendezvous in Quercy
Nestled between Caussade and Septfonds, on the foothills of the Bas-Quercy plateaux, the village of Monteils hosts its traditional flea market every May, organised by the Parents' Association (APE) of the local school. This springtime event opens the bargain-hunting season in Tarn-et-Garonne and draws seasoned hunters and families alike, all looking for a good deal in an authentically village atmosphere.
On stands set up throughout the village centre, private sellers and small dealers display a wide range of items: children's and adults' clothes, second-hand toys, vintage tableware, books, vinyl records, small antiques, tools, used furniture, decoration items and Quercy curios. Visitors particularly appreciate Monteils for its authentic feel, far from large urban gatherings.
The Monteils flea market is run by the APE, whose proceeds fund educational projects and school outings for local children. A bar and small food stand run by parent volunteers complete the day, with coffee in the morning, sandwiches, chips and cold drinks throughout the day.
Monteils, home to around 1,100 inhabitants, offers walkers a quiet, leafy backdrop. The village square and surrounding streets become alleyways of stalls to explore at leisure. Early birds arrive from 7:30am for the best finds; the afternoon is more relaxed, with a village-fete feel.
